Work Study Program
Program Structure
Students receive instruction in class at St. Rita and off-campus at various businesses.
In class instruction focuses on the following:
- Career Exploration
- Interviewing Skills
- General Skills that can be applied in the workplace
- Soft Skills for employment, such as appropriate workplace communication
- Resume Writing
- Teamwork
- Problem Solving
- Time Management
- Self-Determination
Why Is This Program Important
Work study plays an important role in the student's true understanding of what their future may look like. This program allows students to personally experience a variety of different jobs to get an idea of their own skills and interests.
These hands-on jobs provide unique learning experiences they cannot get when only in the classroom. Many students start the program with one thought or career in mind, but participating in the work study program broadens their future plans.
Why The Need?
Ohio educational law states students with disabilities need to start career exploration and work readiness development starting at age 14. At St. Rita School for the Deaf, all students in grades 7-12 take a Work Study class that covers career exploration, job readiness, financial literacy, and self-advocacy skills.
We want our students to experience authentic environments to do the following: observe, practice, and gain real work experience.
